                   THE LIGHTNING SPRINT

Picture
After a two year absence on August 25th and 26th the streets of Dunmanway will once again ring with the sound of motorcycles being used  in anger.
In  August 2010 after an 18 year gap roadracing returned to the rebel county with the staging of the Munster 100 in Dunmanway.
The Lightning Sprint will use part of the 2010 circuit and the town
square in this new event. The bikes will start at the end of the west green near
Joanne's restaurant. They will race down westgreen, through a chicane round the
lefthand corner at the AIB bank over the bridge and into the square. The bikes
will then go sharp right at Neilums bar, left at the pedestrian crossing, left
at the Arch bar then back over the bridge and around the bank corner for a
second time and over the finish line. The bike returns to the staging area and
the next bike blasts off. There will be racebike and streetbike classes as well
as a pre 1985 and pre 1960 class. Entry forms and Regs to follow soon. There
will also be trade stalls in the paddock as well as a  bikeshow and a Stephen
Davison slideshow over the weekend.
Lots of fun for the whole family with
face-painters, fire eaters jugglers and lots more.

                                                        Adelaide Masters Series rounds 1,2 & 3.

Last weekend saw the long awaited return of the Adelaide Masters to Mondello Park. The series has built up the reputation of being one of the premier race events on this island and is a firm favourite with competitors and race fans alike. The two day event with televised Superbike and SuperSport races on Sunday saw the first sighting on these shores of Ducati's 1199 Panigale in race trim.
JMF Milsport brought the Italian Superbike to Mondello complete with F1 style electronics which give you the capability of changing suspension settings while on track. Whatever next remote control bikes (see Georges pics)? On board the Bologna bullet was BSS rider General Lee Johnston, who will campaign in the NW200 and the TT on the machine later in the year.
Ok now to the racing, where to start? The beginning would be a good a spot I suppose and with sign on came the rumour of another racer to retire from the sport in a matter of weeks. The paddock was alive with whispers of disbelief as Declan Swanton appeared on the front page of the programme. The last man to adorn the front page of a race programme was the now retired Baylon so was it true???? More on this story later!
We had club members running in every class except the two stroke and yes even the sidecars. Met Eireann got the wet forecast wrong for once with the race conditions on Saturday near perfect as the SuperSport 600 riders formed on the grid. Club members in this one were Paudie Keohane and Declan Swanton, both riders didn't have the best of starts to the weekend though. With Declan who qualified on the front row for this one headed into turn one and was involved in an incident that could have turned out a lot worse than just a trip to the gravel. He returned to the track in last position and worked his way up to 9th before deciding to retire from the race. Paudie Keohane also retired from the race as the killeady man had decided to change tyre manufacturer at the weekend and was dogged by set up problems on his Yamaha R6.

Next up on Saturday was the Supertwins, with myself and the return of Derek (Presidento) Wilson competing in this one. Derek returning after a five year sabbatical and wasted no time in qualifying, putting his Suzuki Sv into 2nd position behind the KMR Kawasaki of poleman Conor Parkhill. Derek's return was put to a firm halt by the 7th lap of the race however when a coming together with Dave Butler caused both riders to crash out. Both riders were battling for the lead at the time of the racing incident! This left yours truly who was lying in 3rd before the incident in the lead. I held the lead until the penultimate lap when I made a mistake at Dunlop and Brendan Glover took his opportunity to pass. The Dublin native went onto take the win from myself in 2nd and Ronan Pentony in 3rd.

Onto the Superbikes race and that gleaming red Ducati..... Enough about that! Emmet O Grady on his Jog Tuning GSXR was our club member in this one and put his machine into 2nd position on the grid. Following on from his super result in Kirkistown on Easter Monday, expectations were high for a good result in this one. Emmet had a good start and slotted into second position, chasing McCormack hard he then had a big high side exiting the final turn on lap 3 when the race was red flagged. Thankfully Emmett was ok and ended up with just bruising to his right hand.

Pre-injection and the return of Declan who put his SBK Bikes R6 into 2nd position on the grid behind Steven Titterington. He was joined on the grid by another club member Carrigaline man John Horgan. Titterington was off at turn one and so was Declan, off into the lead that is. From turn one Swanton never looked back, taking the win by a very impressive twenty four seconds. John however wasn't so lucky though with a DNF.

George Harrington was in action in the Lightweight SuperSport aboard his 400 Honda. The Ballincollig man qualifying in 18th position and fighting his way up to a very respectable 14th in race one on Saturday.

 Phew!!!! And onto part 2.
Sunday saw the Adelaide Masters pay an emotional tribute to last years SuperSport Cup Champion Sean Hurley. Leading out the Parade lap was Declan on Sean's Championship winning R6 followed by friends from all classes in the paddock. Emotions were running high as I for one watched Declan cross the finish line on the back wheel. A fitting tribute to a true champion and a canvas with photographs of Sean was also unveiled in the bar on Saturday. A big thank you to Mondello Park Staff and the Marshals association for that one.
SuperSport race two on Sunday saw a dry race once again, Declan finishing this one in 7th place. Paudie still not finding a good setting on the Yamaha finishing in 9th place in the cup. With race 3 after lunch came the rain, Paudie could not find the setting he was looking for and struggled once more. Declan on the other hand made light work of the wet conditions and got off to a good start. Making 3rd place his own from Lisburn rider Carl Phillips. Richie Ryan lead the race putting in very quick lap times as the heavens opened. His best a 1:00.54 allowed him to stretch a lead over 2nd place man McCormack followed closely by Swanton. The Tipperary man found the limit in
the monsoon like conditions on the 7th lap however, pushing to hard and crashing out. The race was red flagged and the restart saw Declan again battle it out with McCormack. The CD Racing Yamaha going well and had to be as Swanton pushed for the win. McCormack however held on to take the win from Swanton in 2nd and
Phillips in third. Credit to all riders in this one as they battled in the worst track conditions of the day.

Supertwins race two saw a late entry from yet another club member, Skerries man Micheal Sweeney. Micko deciding to get some setup time on his new Kawasaki ER6 before the road race season opener in Cookstown next weekend. Starting from the back of the grid he got a great start and jumped passed me into 4th place exiting turn one. Derek also got a good start and was in 2nd place behind Parkhill. I bet Wilson wished Sweeney stayed at home though as he went onto to take the win from Derek in 2nd and Parkhill in 3rd. Race 3 was wet but it had just stopped raining as we lined up on the grid after the SuperSport race. Sweeney again came from nowhere out of turn one and slotted into 4th behind Butler, Derek again had a good start as he led out the country for the first lap. I had a good start also moving up to fifth ahead of Parkhill and Glover. Lap two got a bit messy as we headed into the Esses for the second time with Wilson and Butler touching and running wide. Derek went into the gravel trap and later retired. I lost my battle in trying to keep Parkhill behind me and the KMR Kawasaki rider went on to take his first win of the weekend from Sweeney in 2nd and yours truly delighted with another podium in 3rd.

Superbikes race two saw Emmett get a poor start and head out of turn 2 in 8th position. He started to get going and pick off riders lap by lap. He then passed Damien Byrne to take 2nd with two laps remaining but leader McCormack had a big enough lead to take the win with O Grady 2nd and Byrne 3rd on the Honda. Race three saw a wet race and Emmett had another good result here with 4th place behind BJ Toal 3rd on his R1 Yamaha, Johnston now
getting to grips with the Duke in 2nd with McCormack taking another win.

Pre-injection race two was again dominated by Swanton on his Yamaha. Leading from start to finish he went on to take the win. The rest of the field did not have the answer on how to stop him. Or did they? A wet race three was a different affair for Swanton though. A good start saw him again lead the field out the country from turn 2 but as he appeared round Dunlop corner onto the Straight Thomas Whitmore was hot on his heels. The man from Gorey Co Wexford aboard his Honda CBR kept Swanton honest lap after lap. However he held off the challenge from the Wexford man to take a hat trick of impressive wins in the class. John Horgan from Carrigaline capped off only his second race meeting in style. Having never raced in the rain before he took to it like, wait for it..... A duck to water. Relishing the challenge in the late afternoon downpour at the county Kildare venue, he went on to take a brilliant and well deserved 3rd place. This was his first podium so I guess he broke his Duck!!! Quack quack
I'm here all week!!!

Lightweight SuperSport saw George Harrington in action again. A good start form George allowed him to move up the field early on.He ended up taking a very good top 10 finish in race two. Unfortunately problems with his Honda machine meant he was unable to start race three.

Le Finale Grande or Grand Final if your from upper Glanmire was the feature race of the day and saw the quickest 30 riders from both Superbike and SuperSport battle it out. Pole position was taken by McCormack and as they headed into turn 1 he was in the lead. But a high side coming out of Ford corner and the Waterford man was out. Our interest in this race was O Grady and Swanton with both men taking advantage of good starts on the first lap. Emmett moved up to second but on lap two he highsided as he got on the power coming out of Dunlop corner onto the straight. He got up unhurt but was bitterly disappointed when he returned to pit lane. Damien Byrne was now in the lead on the Honda fireblade with Carl Phillips on the R6 and the Ducati of Johnston in very close proximity. Both Phillips and Johnston fought hard to try and pass the Kilkenny rider but he managed to keep at the front of what was now a six wheel train. Swanton took 5th place in this one behind Courtney in 4th on the Honda, Johnston in 3rd, Phillips a very impressive 2nd with Byrne taking the win.

Sidecars and monkeys, only one man for the job Eoin"Monkey"O Sullivan. Fair dues to Owen as he tried his hand in the sidecars at the weekend and enjoyed it to by all accounts.
Next Masters round is not until June thank god as my fingers should have stopped bleeding by then!!!  Just a word of thanks to all Club members who made the trip to Mondello over the weekend. Your support is appreciated by all the riders and Mondello too as they had a record attendance for a non international meeting at the weekend!!!      RESULTS HERE
Next Short Circuit Meeting is Clubmans Sunday May 27th at Mondello.
Finally Ends. Toby.
